Personal Log - Commander Sanek
U.S.S. Yukon, Stardate 87926.56
Information has been submitted to the Institute by Admiral Allahweh Brahman regarding Red Matter, and the project that was originally intended to research it - Project RMD. Upon reading this information it was my decision to involve my best officers, Lieutenant Commander's Solida and Vaareler - Ship's Doctor and Ship's Science Officer, respectively - and review their opinions on the subject. My decision to keep the information classified, at least for the present, aboard the Yukon was made to quell suppositions and rumors that could cause introspective moral issues.
As I surmised, Lieutenant Commander Solida's response to the information breif was emotional. Her distress was evident, and despite my agreement with her opinion I found her outbursts unlike her and unprofessional. I spoke to her at length later in the day during which she apologized for her reaction.
Lieutenant Commander Vaareler regarded the information carefully and it's possible ramifications. After my discussion with Solida, Vaareler and I developed several theories and projections as to the possibilities of Red Matter usage against singularities and other natural phenomena that are dangerous to civilized life. Despite our ignorance due to the classified nature of the initial project it is my intention to suggest our hypothesis at some time in the future to Institute Staff with the intent that the possibility of Project RMD be relegated to the Institute or some other civilian science division, and remove it from military pervue.
Later in the duty day I received further data that indicated that initial supposition of the intended brief was incorrect, and that the latter research on Project RMD was, in fact, being conducted in an effort to prove hypotheses that could collapse any singularity - natural or otherwise. This information was disseminated to Lieutenant Commander's Solida and Vaareler. Solida was visibly relieved, but still harbored doubts as to militant use still possible under Starfleet.
I must say at this juncture that I concur.
History is replete with civilizations using weapons of immense destructive power during crisis that initially appear to threaten the very existence of said civilizations. The moral implications of such power diminish as the threat of extinction looms closer. Furthermore, civilizations with a basis on conflict and conquest - such as the Klingons - would not hesitate to utilize such destructive power at every opportunity. As further information comes to light regarding this project, responsible officers with a precident for what is best for civilization as a whole must act to place the data safely within quarrantine, however improbable that may be at this time.
The Yukon has two days, twenty-one hours and fourty-eight minutes until our return to the Khozan Cluster for further scientific analysis and study. The injured crew from our last mission have been replaced with qualified officers, and I expect an increase in productivity of at least twelve point zero six percent. It is my intention to return to system 2143.2 to gather information for research of an ingriguing astrophysical anomaly we encountered near one of the planet's moons. Initial scans indicated the possibility of dimensional space; however, this data was inconclusive during our first examination of the anomaly.
