Introduction

"From this distant vantage point, the Earth might not seem of any particular interest. But for us, it's different. Consider again that dot. That's here. That's home. That's us. On it everyone you love, everyone you know, everyone you ever heard of, every human being who ever was, lived out their lives. The aggregate of our joy and suffering, thousands of confident religions, ideologies, and economic doctrines, every hunter and forager, every hero and coward, every creator and destroyer of civilization, every king and peasant, every young couple in love, every mother and father, hopeful child, inventor and explorer, every teacher of morals, every corrupt politician, every "superstar," every "supreme leader," every saint and sinner in the history of our species lived there – on a mote of dust suspended in a sunbeam. "

-Carl Sagan commenting on Voyager 1's image of the Solar System.

Mission Summary

The U.S.S. Carl Sagan has been tasked with deep space research and investigation of new systems and planets, along with continuing research into the further reaches of space that include the Khazon Cluster, Eridan Belt, Delta Volanis Cluster, Arucanis Arm, Hromi Cluster, and others. Further details include missions in support of Starfleet initiatives as well as when needed in defense and support of military actions against the Klingon Defense Forces.
Further support roles include continuing work and relations with the newly re-created Romulan government on New Romulus in an effort to ensure their continued success as a Republic. Tasks to this effect include support against Tal Shiar remnants and other Romulan dissidents who seek power for themselves.

Vessel Namesake

The U.S.S. Carl Sagan is named after one of the most prominent and well known Cosmologists in Earth history, Carl Edward Sagan. Doctor Sagan was instrumental in bringing cosmic science and complex astronomical ideas into mainstream society with his ability to explain complicated ideas in simple and easy to understand terminology and examples. With his show Cosmos, he continued that vein by explaining astrophysical concepts of the nature of the Universe. He was also a prolific writer of books based on astrophysics and astronomy, including a novel about first contact called Contact, which was made into a movie.
Sagan was also famous for the catchphrase "... billions and billions," which he actually never said. The only reference to such a phrase was his book Cosmos where, in chapter 1, page 3, he writes "A galaxy is composed of gas and dust and stars - billions upon billions of stars." However, it was more his frequent use of the word billions, along with his unique delivery by emphasizing the "b" to distinguish it from millions, that eventually caused the catchphrase to become mainstream.
