Introduction

"The Kelvin scale is named after the Belfast-born, Glasgow University engineer and physicist William Thomson, 1st Baron Kelvin (1824–1907), who wrote of the need for an "absolute thermometric scale". Unlike the degree Fahrenheit and degree Celsius, the kelvin is not referred to or typeset as a degree. The kelvin is the primary unit of measurement in the physical sciences, but is often used in conjunction with the degree Celsius, which has the same magnitude. Subtracting 273.16 K from the temperature of the triple point of water (0.01 °C) makes absolute zero (0 K) equivalent to −273.15 °C (−459.67 °F)."

Mission Summary

The U.S.S. Kelvin has had a somewhat quiet existence as a support and research vessel since it's initial commission date of Stardate DATE. The vessel has served Starfleet on a number of different missions since, and was only turned to combat related duty once the Khitomer Accords were broken by the Klingon Empire in Stardate DATE. At that time it was relegated to support duty in the Alpha Centauri and Iota Pavonis Sectors to allow newer ships to be transferred to the Klingon front.

Vessel Namesake

The U.S.S. Kelvin was named by it's first captain as somewhat of a joke, based primarily on a warp drive energy fluctuation that raised the internal temperature of the warp core to nearly catastrophic levels during one of it's shakedown cruises. A Kelvin is a unit of measurement for temperature.
