Brief Information

Solida T'yra is a woman who has been driven by a desire to aid and assist people with medical issues since her early childhood, which set her on the path to becoming a doctor early in life. Her desire to assist in finding cures for disease has been almost an obsession since her teen years, which had her eventually publish two works on disease. All of this was in no small part due to her father, the well known Neurosurgeon Doctor Nikael T'yra, but also due to her ability to sense people's emotions, which has helped her empathize with her patients from the beginning... and has also led her to become involved with the most unlikely person she could have imagined.
From the moment she met Sanek, she was intrigued by him. This was mostly due to the fact that, despite his stoic, emotionless demeanor, she could briefly, occasionally, sense deep hidden emotions from him that surprised her. Her admiration and respect of him grew over time until she realized things had progressed beyond just admiration, at which time she began to pursue him. It was the realization, based on those slight captures of emotion from him, that made her realize his own feelings - however deeply they lay hidden - for her. It wasn't until after the Delta Volanis Incident that Sanek eventually faced the situation directly, and ever since that moment, the two have been extremely close.

Personality

Solida is a very outgoing individual. She is not afraid to take risks, and can seem somewhat brash in her desire to get involved in things occasionally, due to a streak of daring in her personality. She is, however, extremely empathic to other individual's feelings and needs... especially whereas medical issues are concerned with disease, injury, and sickness. Her telepathic abilities to sense other's emotions allow her to interact with her patients on a much more empathic level, and - at least she believes - it helps her patients to recover more quickly when they know their doctor actually feels their pain in some way.

Sanek and Solida after visiting her parents in San Francisco.

Despite being raised by Betazoid parents and as such being taught the customs and lifestyle of a Betazoid, Solida's exposure to humans during her formative years and later internship and Academy years definitely left it's mark on her personality. She does not act as a typical Betazoid, as she has taken on more human-like personality traits. However despite this, she still retains the Betazoid tradition of blunt honesty, which can - at times - cause strain amongst her friends and co-workers.
She abhors cruelty, bullies, and any sort of oppression and tyranny, and dislikes violence of any kind - although she does realize that at times it is necessary to protect freedoms and safety of others. She will rarely ever fight unless she has no choice... or unless driven to it by witnessing acts of brutality. A frequent clash of will exists between Solida and Sanek whereas away teams are concerned regarding this personality trait - she always "volunteers" to go on away teams, but will refuse to bring a weapon... bringing instead her medical bag and as much medical and trauma equipment as is practical.
Despite her advanced medical knowledge and clean appearance, she tends to be somewhat cluttered when it comes to housekeeping. Her quarters, and particularly her office, tend to reflect this, with papers and magazines scattered or stacked haphazardly about in no particular order.

Family Information

Solida was raised by both her parents, who despite having busy Starfleet careers were always there for her as she grew up. She has no other siblings. She has had little contact with her distant family since birth, as they all reside on Betazed.

Brief Biography

Childhood and Early Life (2374 - 2392)

Solida T'yra was born to Betazoid parents on Terra on November 19th, 2374. Both her parents were Starfleet officers; her mother was a personnel officer for Starfleet Academy, and her father was a medical doctor who was both head of the Neurologic Department at the Starfleet medical facility as well as a professor of biology. Despite being raised on Terra and interacting - for the most part - with humans throughout her childhood, Solida was schooled in Betazed customs and lifestyle by her parents as she grew. She learned to develop her telepathic abilities early, and found that, mostly because of her blunt honesty, she was somewhat of an outcast at school.

Solida at the age of 16.

In her teenage years, she began to take an avid interest in medicine when a close friend of hers was diagnosed with cancer. Despite there being a cure, this particular form of cancer was incurable beyond a certain stage... past which her friend had reached upon her diagnosis. Solida emplored her father to intervene somehow, but as he couldn't do anything to stop the disease she had to watch her friend slowly die over the next few weeks. The death had a profound effect on Solida. Already determined to follow her father's footsteps into medicine, it simply solidified her desire to get involved in attempts at disease control and cures.

Medical School (2692 - 2400)

After her graduation, she attended medical school at Thomas Raymond University, graduating second in her class. With her college preparatory courses and her drive to excel she completed medical school two years early. Her medical thesis was a study on Zanthi Fever that she eventually published as "A physiological study of advanced Zanthi Fever." She followed this up with a year's internship, followed by another year of residency, at Susan Nuress Medical Center in San Francisco. Despite serving them both at the same hospital her father practiced at, she deliberately chose to serve under a different physician, Doctor Jerome Hudson, as she wanted her own accomplishments to stand out. Her two years there ended with her being recognized as one of the top residency performers, and shortly thereafter she received her doctorate in General Surgery.

Starfleet Medical Academy (2400 - 2404)

It was the spring of 2400 that she decided to join Starfleet. She made the choice because she felt she could better serve as a doctor under the prevue and technical facilities that Starfleet offered. Her four years in Starfleet Academy were some of the hardest of her life... but she excelled in her studies as she found that she actually performed better under stress and deadlines. She continued her medical science knowledge and took side courses in exobiology to assist her in the possibility of having to treat other Federation races aside from humans and betazoids. In her last year at the Academy she wrote and published - due to her advanced studies on the subject - "Cancer: A retrospective history and analysis." She graduated in the spring of 2404 again in the top ten percent of her class with an equivalent Masters Degree in Orthopedic Surgery.
It was shortly after her graduation, and during the mill and grind of preparing for a first term assignment, that she met a then younger Lieutenant Sanek while he was finalizing his year at the Academy teaching Astrophysics. Her initial infatuation was in part due to having never had direct contact with a Vulcan before, but she grew more intrigued as she could just barely capture emotions from him despite his outward emotionless state. As she awaited her assignment over the next few weeks, her infatuation began to develop into something more. When found out that Lieutenant Sanek was being assigned to the U.S.S. Grayling as Chief Science Officer, she had her mother make a few inquiries and she found that an assistant medical officer was needed on the Grayling as well. Solida immediately went and volunteered for the position, and due to her marks in the Academy and internship she was granted the position.

U.S.S. Grayling (2404 - 2407)

Solida in Sick Bay on the U.S.S Grayling with a patient.

She spent the next three years aboard the U.S.S. Grayling. She found that serving aboard a ship was much different than a permanent billet assignment within Starfleet... but she surprised herself as she grew to like the excitement of being in space and exploring new places. The illnesses and wounds of her crew mates were academically challenging as well as she had to, on frequent occasions, diagnose issues on her own with little assistance or previous medical historical data. She began to actually enjoy serving aboard ship, her outgoing nature quickly making friends (which, due to being an outcast in school and less so in the Academy, was a new experience for her). She grew closer to Sanek as well, and slowly began to realize that he felt something for her in return - although outwardly he remained typically emotionless.
It was during the second year of her cruise that she took some leave to vacation for two days on Risa. Sanek came with her, and during their stay he picked a Muktuk flower for her that she has kept since, potted and cared for on her desk in her office.
During the final year of her assignment with the Grayling, she was injured fairly severely. A routine science mission to the surface of a planet in the Delta Volanis Cluster turned dangerous when as then unknown predators attacked. In attempting to shelter a badly injured crew member from an attack, she was attacked by one of the predators and badly injured herself. The healing process took some time, but she was left with a permanent scar on her upper left cheek just below her eye.

Starfleet Medical Board (2407 - 2409)

After her third year aboard the Grayling, she was re-assigned. The entire cadet crew of the ship was changing and getting permanent assignments. Sanek was provided the opportunity for a captaincy aboard the U.S.S. Nautilus - despite her requests she did not get a billet aboard the Nautilus but was instead assigned duty on a Starfleet Medical Review board, where it was her duty to oversee medical inquiries and serve on court cases involving Starfleet medical personnel. She also was assigned the task of reviewing new medical technology aboard newer Starfleet vessels, and evaluating their potential for use by medical personnel.
After a eighteen months of this duty, which she loathed serving but none-the-less performed very well, the sudden appearance of Sanek at her apartment door changed her life as he offered her the Chief Medical Officer position aboard his new ship, the U.S.S. Yukon. She gladly accepted... excited to get back into space where she could actually do something. She was also ecstatic to be aboard the same ship as Sanek again.

U.S.S. Yukon and U.S.S. Archimedes (2409)

The next year of Solida's life was one of the busiest that she had experienced up to that time. The U.S.S. Yukon was tasked with deep space research, and exposure to unknown cosmic anomalies as well as typical ailments and accidents kept her and her staff constantly at work. She had been aboard the Yukon for only a few months when the Institute re-assigned Sanek and his crew to the U.S.S. Archimedes, a Hope class vessel, for a long term science expedition into the Afehirr Nebula. The larger vessel oddly had a small, cramped medical bay which frustrated Solida due to it's claustrophobic feel.
She used her free time for further medical studies into species specific anatomy and physiology, frequently using any down time during her duties to both study and examine other species assigned to the vessel for further knowledge and experience. She was also able to continue to pursue Sanek, and grew closer to him - and he to her - during this period.

U.S.S. Alan Shepard (2409 - 2411)

After the mission aboard the Archimedes was concluded, Sanek and his crew were assigned the newly commissioned Discovery class U.S.S. Alan Shepard. The newest of it's class, with a wholly redesigned interior and state of the art technology, Solida loved the medical facilities. She was able to utilize the facilities full extent only a few months later when, during a rescue mission, the ship was damaged and many people were injured due to burns and smoke inhalation. The new facilities allowed her to make quicker diagnosis and provide near immediate care and relief.
During the month of July in 2410 she and Sanek once again visited Risa for several days. Their association grew more formal during their stay. Prior to their leaving, Sanek again picked a Muktuk flower for her. She potted this one next to the first one he'd given her, and keeps them both in her office side by side.

The Delta Volanis Incident (2411)

Despite having several close calls throughout her career, it wasn't until November of 2411 that she had her first true brush with death. When Delta Volanis anomaly DC-8538-AA collapsed, she was in medical. The sudden loss of gravity caught her by surprise, and she was certain the ship was doomed as they attempted to escape. The huge number of injuries aboard the ship overwhelmed her and her staff, and she had to find temporary placements, eventually commandeering several stateroom near Medical, to be able to treat them all.
The incident forced her to take stock of her life and decide what was truly important, and she began to pursue Sanek with a more determined state of mind. She was surprised when he began to reciprocate her advances... and after some time the two began a relationship - however tentatively it may have been due to Sanek's Vulcan heritage - that she'd longed for for years.

U.S.S. James E. McDonald

After the situation with the Delta Volanis anomaly and the resultant hearing, Sanek and his crew were assigned a prototype vessel, the U.S.S. James E. McDonald. Even more advanced than the Alan Shepard, the medical facilities were top of the line, which suited her perfectly. She continued her study of species specific anatomy, and was forced to use that knowledge to save the life of a klingon when the away team had been attacked by a group of rogue Gorn.

16th Mobile Fleet (2411)

While serving aboard the James McDonald, she, as a part of it's crew, was re-assigned to the 16th Mobile fleet. The change was minimal at first, until Sanek, who had been promoted to the Executive Officer of the fleet, offered her the position of Chief Medical Officer. As this came with a grade increase to Captain, she was surprised, but decided to take the position on the condition that she remain the James McDonald's CMO as well.
While she was initially happy for the increased responsibilities, she eventually grew to dislike the position due to the increased workload and required paperwork, which began to keep her from her specialty of being a doctor. Nevertheless she put up with the change until the 16th was disbanded by Starfleet.

12th Fleet (2412)

With the 16th's disbandment, the James McDonald and her crew were re-assigned to the 12th Fleet's Exploration Division. Solida was glad of this change, as it absolved her of the required responsibilities of her previous CMO position in the 16th, and she was able to continue her duties as the CMO of the McDonald. This also gave her more time with Sanek as well, for which she was grateful.

Hobbies / Interests

Solida shortly after receiving her promotion to Commander.

Solida's primary hobby is reading. She loves to read, and has a rather large collection of actual paper books that she keeps with her along with the hundreds of digital books she has as well. Fiction and Gothic Horror tend to be her favorite genres. She herself has published two works - "A physiological study of advanced Zanthi Fever" and "Cancer: A retrospective history and analysis." Despite those however she still considers herself an amateur writer, primarily due to a desire to write novels over texts. She has started two novel manuscripts, both historical fiction.
She has a growing interest in Vulcan society, sociology, and philosophy, primarily due to her association with Sanek over the years. She finds their culture fascinating and despite it's largely emotionless appearance, supremely peaceful.
Some of her other interests are listening to classical music, which includes ancient Earth and Betazoid composers, experiencing the natural world of different planets outdoor activities when she has the opportunity, and an appreciation for nature, which expresses itself with the varying number of plants and flowers she decorates her stateroom and office with.

Academic History and Distinctions

Solida has spent considerable time in the study of medical science in addition to her doctorate degree. She is largely fascinated by it, and tries to keep herself well versed in as much medical knowledge as possible beyond her own expertise. She also knows from experience that this knowledge will come in handy at some point in the future, as it has several times in the past.

Service Record

Below is a comprehensive listing of Solida's service record. Because of her Starfleet position as a Chief Medical Officer, included is her Medical School and Internship dates.

  • 2392 - 2398 (Stardate 70060.28): Medical School
Solida began her medical career by attending courses at Thomas Raymond University, where she completed her doctorate degree two years early, graduating second in her class. She wrote her thesis on Zanthi Fever, which she eventually published as a white paper: A physiological study of advanced Zanthi Fever.

  • 2398 - 2400 (Stardate 76001.25): Internship (Susan Nuress Medical Center)
Solida served her internship at the same hospital where her father was a surgeon, Susan Nuress Medical Center (the former UCSF Medical Center, San Francisco), under doctor Jerome Hudson, who gave her excellent reviews and considered her to be his best intern throughout her tenure at the hospital.

  • 2400 - 2404 (Stardate 78166.84): Starfleet Medical Academy
With a solid medical doctorate under her belt, Solida's first years at Starfleet Medical Academy were challenging when she found the curriculum to include topics beyond her previous studies. None-the-less, she excelled there as well, displaying a drive for medical knowledge that gained her a position in the top 5% of her class. Her studies of cancer eventually ended with her writing her thesis on it, which she published later as Cancer: A retrospective history and analysis.

  • 2404 - 2407 (Stardate 82134.05): U.S.S. Grayling
With her required medical academic courses completed, Solida, with the help of her mother, managed to get herself assigned as the assistant medical officer aboard the U.S.S. Grayling under Chief Medical Officer Lieutenant Commander Alex Reisson. During her three year assignment she distinguished herself on a number of occasions, including one where the injury of Commander Reisson required her to take charge of the ship's medical duties for three weeks.

  • 2407 - 2409 (Stardate 85349.19): Starfleet Medical Review Board
While she had desired to continue her ship assignments pursuant to a possible Chief Medical Officer position, her next assignment as on Sol as a member of one of the Starfleet Medical Review Boards. While there she oversaw many medical cases as well as being a member of the Starfleet Medical team that oversaw new medical technology and it's installation, quality and control, and use aboard newer Starfleet vessels.

  • 2409 (Stardate 86842.35): U.S.S. Yukon and Alpha Centauri Institute
Solida, after her Starfleet Medical Board assigment, was due to be assigned to the U.S.S. Taffenburg, but then Commander Sanek was able to have her re-assigned to his own vessel, the U.S.S. Yukon, as Chief Medical Officer. Both because of her desire to be Chief Medical Officer aboard a ship, as well as her desire to serve with Sanek again, she accepted the assignment, along with it's change to serving with the Alpha Centauri Institute. While on the Yukon, she began to continue studies into exobiology and exophysiology to better serve her patients who were of different species.

  • 2409 (Stardate 87283.90): U.S.S. Archimedes (2 months)
While her two month assignment with the rest of the Yukon crew to the U.S.S. Archimedes was interesting for her due to the medical facilities available, she disliked the layout of the medical bay itself, being cramped and difficult for multiple people to work in.

  • 2409 (Stardate 87487.43): U.S.S. Alan Shepard
Her time aboard the Alan Shepard was some of the best of her career. The medical facilities were excellent, as was the medical bay layout, and her staff was hand picked. The few incidents, including the fire breakout during the Captain Stolliker rescue operation, were dealt with quickly and professionally, saving the lives of crew members who may not have survived with lesser medical facilities available.

  • 2410 (Stardate 88457.61): Delta Volanis Incident
Solida was in Medical, per protocol, when the singularity collapsed. She was able to keep herself from injury, and later, with her staff, attended to the 89 casualties, commandeering several staterooms to assist with administering to the injured.

  • 2410 (Stardate 89497.86): Admiralty Hearing
Called as a principle witness against Sanek in his Admiralty Hearing, she gave precise information and answers to the Admiralty during her questioning, believing that Sanek had saved the entire ship despite the injuries and damage to the vessel. During the wait for the Hearing she was offered the Chief Medical Officer position aboard the U.S.S. Franssen, but turned it down to remain with Sanek and his crew.

  • 2411 (Stardate 89631.77): U.S.S. James E. McDonald
Sanek's re-assignment to the U.S.S. James E. McDonald came with it a completely redesigned medical bay, along with top of the line medical equipment and technology. Solida was very happy with the facilities aboard her new vessel, which gave her far more options with which to assist injured crew members or other potential medical procedures.

  • 2411 (Stardate 89697.35): 16th Mobile Fleet
Shortly after the Hearing and re-assignment to the U.S.S. James E. McDonald, she and her crew were assigned to the 16th Mobile Fleet. As a somewhat new, and fledgling, unit, she was offered, and accepted, the position of Chief Medical Officer for the unit itself. She served in this capacity, as well as continuing her duties as Chief Medical Officer aboard the James McDonald, for the next year.

  • 2412 (Stardate 90801.25): 12th Fleet
With the disbanding of the 16th Mobile Fleet, her duties as Chief Medical Officer for the unit went along with it. She was grateful, as she'd come to detest the paperwork required for the position, and was glad to go back to being simply the Chief Medical Officer aboat Sanek's ship. The assignment with the 12th Fleet had little affect on her individually or personally, as her duties didn't change.

Starship Commands

Solida never undertook command courses while at the Academy. Her career choice as a medical officer took her in a different direction, and after serving aboard ships she has no desire to be in a position to command one.
