The U.S.S. Archimedes leaving Sol for the Afehirr Nebula.
Name | U.S.S. Archimedes |
Registry | NCC-98212 |
Class | Olympic class Long Range Research Vessel |
Captain | Sanek |
Introduction
"“Give me but one firm spot on which to stand, and I will move the earth.”."
-Quotation believed to have been attributed to Archimedes related to the lever.
Mission Summary
The U.S.S. Archimedes was initially tasked with scientific research on spacial and temporal anomalies along the Romulan edge of space and the Khazon Cluster. Frequent tensions with the Romulans, in part related to the Hobus Supernova, required the vessel to maintain an alert status in the event it was needed for support or assistance with potential conflict.
Vessel Namesake
The U.S.S. Archimedes was named after the famous Earth scientist of antiquity, Archimedes of Syracuse. He has been attributed to have been responsible for a number of ancient inventions and mathematic forumla still in use today, such as the Archimedes Screw, the Archimedes Principle, and potentially the first example of a planetarium.
Further Notes
Despite the Olympic class Long Range Research Vessel's design to be in accordance with lengthy deep space missions, Sanek made several submissions to Starfleet related to what he believed to be poor interior use of space and design flaws. The vessel design is generally unpopular with most science crews because of these issues, and they are used sparingly, mostly as a stepping stone into larger vessels.
